Hyatt Regency Auckland Review

The Hyatt Regency Auckland is a four star hotel located at the edge of downtown Auckland right beside the University of Auckland. Downtown Auckland is about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel while the Harbour is a 15-20 minute walk. The hotel is split up into two wings, the original hotel and the newer residence suites. Both wings offer rooms with harbour and city views. The residence suites are apartment style suites complete with kitchens and balconies. They are quite roomy and command a premium price over the rooms in the other wing.

While not as nice as the residence suites, the regular rooms are decent enough. It is debateable whether this part of the hotel is up to the four star standards found in other Hyatt hotels around the world. The hallways and room furniture definitely show their age and have seen better days. The design of the washroom is also a little bizarre with a counter hanging over the toilet which can make sitting a little uncomfortable. While the Hyatt is by no means perfect, most of the problems are pretty minor if you are not a nitpicker.

Compared to other 4 star hotels, you should be able to get a real good deal by using one of the discount travel sites like Priceline, Expedia or Travelocity. Be warned though, you will not be able to avoid the 4 star hotel prices in the Hyatt’s restaurant and in-room services like internet access. The restaurant in the Hyatt does serve an interesting variety of food but it is pricey. There is no wireless internet access in the rooms, only on the main floor. There is wired access in the rooms which costs $28.13 NZD for 24 hours.
