The Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Rotorua Experience Review

If you are looking for a tour around parts of New Zealand’s north island and you don’t have a car then the Waitomo and Rotorua Day Experience may be for you. The tour starts very early at 7:30 am in downtown Auckland but there is free hotel pickup service before then to bring you downtown. Hotel pickup is offered to a select bunch of hotels so you should check this list before purchasing a tour ticket. The tour costs $310.00 NZD and lasts the entire day at nearly 13 hours.

If you have a very limited amount of time in New Zealand then this tour may be for you as it will let you see some of the highlights that the north island has to offer. However, since Waitomo and Rotorua are so far from Auckland you will end up spending most of the day on the bus driving over 300km. You could easily spend a full day in Waitomo itself and a few days in Rotorua so if you really want to experience both places and have the time, you should consider taking another tour or renting a car.

In order to see everything and get back to Auckland in time, the tour operates under a rigid schedule. The bus driver also acts as a tour guide giving background on New Zealand and the places you visit. There is also another tour guide on the bus to help with passing out food and snacks while the bus is on its way to its next destination.

The tour first travels from Auckland to Waitomo. The first stop on the tour is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. You are taken on a 45 minute tour of the limestone caves which includes a short 5 minutes ride in the grotto where you can see the glowworms glowing in a pitch black setting. After that tour is done, you hop back on the bus and head to Rotorua. On the way to Rotorua the tour guide will serve lunch on the bus.

Just as you reach the outskirts of Rotorua, a stop is made at the Agridome. Here you take an hour tour of an animal farm where you get to see all sorts of farm animals close up as well as see how world famous New Zealand wool is made from sheep. After that tour is down, you hop back on the bus and head through the small town of Rotorua.

After a short trip through some of the scenic parts of the town, the tour takes you to your final stop, Te Puia. Here you get to see the famous geothermal geysers, the New Zealand native kiwi bird as well as be introduced to Maori culture. Once this tour is done, you hop back on the bus and head back to Auckland and reach there after 8pm.
