Base Brisbane Central Review

Base Brisbane Central, formally known as Palace Backpackers, is a decent hostel located in central Brisbane. The hostel has many of the same services you can find in any hostel like 24 hour access and 24 hour reception as well as a TV room on every floor and a self serve kitchen and dining area on the main floor. The hostel also has a bar that serves food located within the building with very affordable prices. They have several different dorms with 4, 6, 8 or 10 beds. Dorm room prices start as low as $26 a night.

While the building and rooms are old, the dorms are generally in good shape. Dorms have ceiling fans and small window openings so it can get hot at night. Each dorm has lockers where you can store your bags and lock them up. The lockers are decently sized big and have just enough room to squeeze in a 70L backpack. Most dooms only have a few plugs. In this day of modern electronics there is no way that this is enough for 5 people to charge their cameras, cellphones, laptops etc. It may be a good idea to bring a long a powerbar. The bed mattresses are about six feet long.

Like most hostels, there are communal washrooms meaning you have to share washrooms with everyone on the same floor. The hostel is quite big with lots of people on each floor and not enough showers. Expect to be waiting around for a shower to free up. There are two computer terminals with internet access on the main floor but you must pay to use them. Incase those fill up, which they usually do, there is an internet café right next door with 15 computers and Wi-Fi internet access. The hostel also has a travel desk located on the main floor and open during business hours which can help backpackers book activities in and around Brisbane and Australia.
